ABSTRACT

Objective:To evaluate the role of Nigella sativa in renoprotectionMaterial and Methods:This prospective, comparative study was completed in a tertiary care centre of north India in patients of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). Group I (Control) received conservative management of CKD and while Group II (Test) received conservative management along with Nigella sativa oil (2.5 mL, orally, once daily) for 12 weeks. Renal function tests were done at 0, 6 and 12 weeks of treatment.Results:There was more progressive improvement in biochemical values and clinical signs and symptoms in test group. There was decrement in blood urea, serum creatinine and 24-hour total urine protein (TUP). There was rise in glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and 24-hour total urine volume (TUV). Conclusion:Nigella sativa oil supplementation is effective and safe in prevention of progression of nephropathy.

ABSTRACT

In recent days response surface methodology [RSM] has widely been applied for development and optimization of cost effective formulations with required quality. Study comprised of three steps including micromeritic comparison of different powder blends of placebo and diclofenac potassium [DP], formulation designing with CCRD [Design Expert, version 7.0.0], and stability testing of selected formulations by using R Gui. Ten formulations [F11-F20] were developed using microcrystalline cellulose [Avicel PH-102] [X1] [13-72%], methocel K15M [X2] [6.59-23.4%] and magnesium stearate [X3] [1.32-4.68%], while responses were % friability and % drug release. Blending rate constant was determined at 3, 6, 9 and 12 minutes. The results of physicochemical parameters were found within acceptable limits. After in vitro testing at pH 1.2, pH 4.5 and pH 6.8, mechanism of drug release, kinetic analysis and statistical evaluation were carried out by model - independent, model-dependent and one-way ANOVA methods. ABSTRACT

Background: Rheumatic fever (RF) and rheumatic heart disease (RHD) continue to affect millions of people around the world, including Bangladesh. Children and adolescents are especially susceptible to this disease. Classical risk factors, i.e. poverty, overcrowding, ignorance and insufficient health care services are responsible for the high incidence and prevalence of these diseases. To assess the prevalence of RF and RHD among children, a school survey was conducted in Bharateswari Homes, in the district of Tangail, Bangladesh. Methods: A total of 947 students were examined. Revised Jones’ criteria (1992), and clinical examination were used for the diagnosis of RF and RHD. Results: Four cases of RF/RHD were found giving the prevalence of 4.22/1000. This is lower than the prevalence reported in eighties, but is consistent with those found in nineties. Conclusion: Among the school children, there is a declining trend in the prevalence of RF/RHD.
